Outdoor Pop-Up Science Experience: Mars Rover Project

Program Description:  Rovers are a kind of car-like spacecraft that NASA uses to explore the surfaces of other worlds!  Rovers have gone to Mars and the Moon and have gathered information about terrain of these foreign landscapes.  They also collect samples of rocks, dust, soil and liquid, if any, to be studied by NASA scientists who are looking for possible signs of life. The two active Rovers on Mars are Curiosity, who has been on Mars since 2012, and Perseverance, the newest Rover, landed in February 2021!

Children will read about Curiosity ,the Story of the Mars Rover and learn about Mars’ terrain and how the Mars Rover collects it data. Afterwards, Children will attempt to engineer their own rubber band powered Mars Rover!

This program is for children ages 3-7 and space is limited. Pre-registration is required.

Cost:  MHCM Members: $6; non-members $10 per child (parents / caregivers FREE)

Please Note: The main museum building is currently closed for renovations.  This special socially-distanced outdoor program will be held in MHCM’s open-air waterfront pavilion.  Due to the increase of the Delta variant in our community, face masks are required of all participants.

Registration is now closed.

Outdoor Pop-Up Science Experience: The Apollo 13 Landing

Program Description:. In 2020, NASA celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 13 mission, which was the seventh crewed mission in the Apollo space program and the third meant to land on the Moon. The craft was launched from Kennedy Space Center on April 11, 1970, but the lunar landing was aborted after an oxygen tank in the service module failed two days into the mission.

Kathryn Johnson, an African American mathematician, who worked for NASA during the Apollo mission, was integral in helping land the Apollo 13 safely home with her mathematical calculations.  In this workshop, children will hear about her amazing story in Counting on Kathryn by Helaine Becker.

Children will then design, build and test their own Lunar Space Capsule to safely slow down as it “returns to Earth!”  Each capsule will be timed as it safely lands.  (This is one time where being the fastest is not the winner! The slower it lands the better!)

Outdoor Pop-Up Science Experience: Light Up Firefly

Program Description:  What says “Hello, Summer Evening!” more than the glowing flicker of fireflies? Fireflies (sometimes called lightning bugs) are soft-winged beetles that have their own light source which allows them to illuminate against the night sky.  Their light is mostly used to find a mate or ward off predators, but their glowing light also makes them easy for humans to observe.

Kids will learn about these illuminating insects while they make their own 3-D “Light-Up” Firefly with copper circuit tape. (Children 4 and under will be using an alternative light source; adult supervision is required at all times.)

This program is for children ages 3-7 and space is limited. Pre-registration is required.

Cost:  MHCM Members: $6; non-members $10 per child (parents / caregivers FREE)

Please Note:  The main museum building remains closed at this time due to COVID-19.  This special socially-distanced outdoor program will be held in MHCM’s open-air waterfront pavilion.  Face masks are encouraged for all participants, but required for unvaccinated attendees and all children under the age of 12.
